Senior second baseman Christine Ramos and freshman pitcher Krista Cobb parlayed big weekends into weekly honors as Ramos was named the Big West Player of the Week, while Cobb claimed Big West Pitcher of the Week honors for the second time in three weeks.
Ramos was the catalyst for a hot Gaucho offense at the Cathedral City Classic last weekend. The senior recorded a hit in each of UCSB’s six games, four of those being multi-hit outings.
In a sampling of her outstanding weekend, Ramos went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a pair of walks against Maryland, added two hits and two RBI against Tennessee Tech and came through with a 3-for-4 showing against nationally-ranked Nevada. She added a RBI and scored twice in the win over the Wolfpack.
For the week, Ramos hit .455 (10-22), with three RBI, six runs scored, two walks and two stolen bases. Her hit parade also extended her hitting streak to nine games.
Cobb is proving to be an invaluable member of the Gaucho pitching staff in her first season, as she has now collected two conference Pitcher of the Week awards in three weeks.
The freshman picked up three of UCSB’s four wins at the Cathedral City Classic. Her first win came against N.C. State, an outing where she tossed five innings, allowing five hits, two runs (both unearned) and walked two.
She also came up with a masterpiece against Kansas, shutting down the Jayhawks’ offense to the tune of four hits over seven innings to go along with only one walk and seven strikeouts. Cobb also got the win over nationally-ranked Nevada in a relief role, allowing just on hit over 2.1 innings.
For the week, Cobb went 3-0 with a 1.08 ERA in 16.2 innings. She allowed 11 hits, four runs, two earned runs, walked four and struck out eight.
UCSB posted a 4-2 record at last weekend’s tournament. The Gauchos currently are 9-6 on the year.
