Freshman Andrew Perez fired a 4-under-par 68 and Matt Siporin added a 2-under 70 on Monday, leading SBCC to a seven-stroke victory over Citrus in the first WSC men’s golf tournament of the year at par-72 Santa Maria CC.
Perez, a former Santa Barbara High standout who’s averaging 69.8, had four birdies and an eagle on a day when four Vaqueros shot par or better. SBCC’s total of 2-under 358 was the lowest in coach Chuck Melendez’s eight years.
“I didn’t know what to expect today, the guys played really well,” said Melendez. “Normally, a score of 365 (Citrus) or 367 (Canyons) would win a WSC tournament.”
The Vaqueros have captured all three tournaments they’ve played this year. Albert Corral and Cameron Tennant posted 72s, Charlie Cerchiai shot 76 and Steve Wilson had a 78.
“The guys are feeding off each other and it’s a very positive atmosphere,” Melendez added. “We have a lot of talent and it’s tough leaving guys behind (for the travel squad).”
SBCC will host the next two WSC tourneys on Sunday at Marshallia Ranch on Vandenberg AFB and Monday at Alisal Ranch in Solvang.
