Eugene, ORE. – The No. 60 UCSB men’s tennis team was held scoreless against No. 41 New Mexico Saturday afternoon at the Student Tennis Center in Eugene, Oregon.
The Gauchos held strong in doubles play in two of the three matches, but the Lobos made a case of why they’re No. 41 in the nation. New Mexico’s Johnny Parkes and Miles Bugby upended the No. 1 doubles team of Philip Therp and Scott Hohenstein, 8-7. At the No. 3 position, the duo of Taylor Chavez Goggin and Nick Caledonia put up a fight against Ben Dunbar and Elliot Chang, but the Lobos came away with a 9-7 triumph.
“After we failed to come away with the doubles point, the match kind of got away from us,” coach Davis explained. “They seemed a little bit better than their ranking indicates.”
In singles, the Gauchos were outmatched in every position. Parks made quick work of Therp, registering a 6-1, 6-2 victory while Bugby pulled out a 4-6, 6-3 (10-6) win over Hohenstein at the No. 3 slot.
Finkelstein also dropped his match on court four to Anderson in a close 1-6, 6-3, (10-7) loss.
The Gauchos fall to 1-4 on the season and will pick up play next weekend against Big West rival UC Davis.
