IRVINE – Senior Gillian Morgan tied the school record for goals in a single game and moved to second on the UC Santa Barbara career goals list on Sunday as the Gauchos took 13th at the UC Irvine Invitational. The No. 19 ranked Gauchos upset No. 13 Long Beach State, 11-10, before knocking off No. 11 Michigan, 7-4, at Corona del Mar High School.
With the pair of wins, UCSB improves to 6-5 overall. The Gauchos’ wins over Michigan and Long Beach State were the first over ranked opponents this season.
During the first game of the day, the Gauchos overcame a one-goal deficit by outscoring Long Beach 4-2 in the fourth quarter to pick up the 11-10 win.
Morgan scored seven goals in the win, tying Sarah Kovach’s (2004-07) school record for goals in a single game. The seven goals also brought her career count to 159 goals (161 at the end of the day), which ranks her second on the UCSB career goals list.
In the 13th-place contest against Michigan, the two teams were tied at half before UCSB outscored the Wolverines 5-2 in the second half to take the 7-4 win.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kate Murphy posted a career-high 12 saves to help lead the Gauchos to the win. Morgan and Claire Buchanan each scored two goals for UCSB.
