LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Junior Anne Marie May captured first-place in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events while senior Chris Good turned in the top finish in both the 200 backstroke and 200 individual medley during a dual meet at UNLV on Saturday afternoon. UCSB, unfortunately, was unable to overcome the Rebels as the women fell, 141-121, and the men were defeated, 169-93.
With the losses, the Gaucho men are now 4-2 in dual meet action this season and the women fall to 5-3 overall. All of UCSB’s losses this season have come against non-conference opponents.
In addition to her individual event wins, May helped the Gaucho “A” relays to first-place finishes in both the 200-yard medley relay (Naomi Javanifard, Katy Freeman and Erin Yamamoto) as well as the 200 free relay (Nadia Dwidar, Naomi Javanifard, Erin Yamamoto). The Gaucho women defeated the UNLV “A” relay by 3.10 seconds in the medley and by over two seconds in the free relay.
The Gaucho women also dominated both breaststroke events going one-two in the 100 and 200. Sara Nicponski took first in the 100 with a time of 1:02.75 and Katy Freemanfinished second (1:03.54). In the 200, the order was reversed as Freeman took the top spot with a mark of 2:16.70 while Nicponski finished second in 2:20.55.
UCSB also went one-two in the 100 free with Nadia Dwidarfinishing second to May with a time of 52.74. May won the event in 50.80 seconds. The junior won the 50 free with a mark of 23.27.
On the men’s end, Kevin Ferguson picked up the first Gaucho win of the meet in the 100 backstroke. The freshman finished in 51.39, beating out UNLV’s Peter Lorring by .06 seconds.
Good captured the only other UCSB first-place finishes for the men. He posted a time of 1:50.47 in the 200 backstroke and finished the 200 IM in 1:54.01.
The Gauchos will swim in their final dual meet of the 2008-09 season next Saturday, Feb. 7 at Campus Pool when they host conference foe Pacific. The meet is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start and the UCSB seniors will be honored prior the opening event.
