SBCC stormed out to a 20-point halftime lead on Saturday night and never looked back in a 70-49 women’s basketball victory over visiting Cuesta. It was the 100th win in the five-year career of Vaquero coach Sandrine Krul.
“That was so exciting to get my 100th win,” Krul said. “I was just joking that I want that 1,000th win like Pat Summitt. I’m not going to stop coaching until I get that. I love to coach.”
The Vaqueros used a balanced scoring attack and a relentless defense that forced 33 turnovers. SBCC remains in second place behind Ventura in the WSC North with records of 21-9 and 7-2.
Francesca DeAngelis, Lauren Wells, Brittany Stephenson and Jennifer Ju each scored eight points while Katie Randall and Imelda Bealer had seven. Janelle Wong added six points and eight rebounds, helping SBCC to a 47-30 advantage on the boards.
“That’s how we win, with balance,” noted Krul. “We don’t do well when one player scores 28. We need to have everyone scoring around 8 or 10.”
The Vaqueros, who led 41-21 at halftime, racked up 23 steals with Randall (5) and Bealer (4) leading the way.
On a night when six sophomores were honored, SBCC put the game away with a 23-3 run that covered 11:13 at the end of the first half and start of the second. A 3-pointer by Ju and a Stephenson layup on a steal and assist from Bealer stretched the lead to 33 points, 57-24, with 14:51 to play.
The only downside was the final 10 minutes, when the Vaqueros managed just three field goals and were outscored 19-7.
“We played so well for 30 minutes, then we went brain dead,” said Krul. “That’s a wake-up call, that’s what we needed. I just blasted them. We can’t come up empty after five defensive stops, including a great block by Brittany Stephenson. Now, we play Pierce, Ventura and Moorpark and they all have winning records. We can’t have letdowns against them.”
The Vaqueros have three WSC games remaining — Wednesday at L.A. Pierce, Saturday at Ventura and Feb. 18 at home against Moorpark.
