SBCC dropped a roller-coaster men’s volleyball match to Golden West on Friday in Huntington Beach. The scores were 30-18, 20-30, 30-19, 30-27.
Tyson Rietz pounded 21 kills and Chris Newcomb had 10 for the Vaqueros (4-3), who had their two-match win streak snapped.
“It was a roller-coaster ride for both teams,” said SBCC coach Melody Parker. “The match was being televised and I was proud of how our team played in the bright lights. That second game was the best we’ve played all year.
“We had a hard time blocking them. They did a good job running their quick offense.”
Mark Hebda had six kills and four blocks but couldn’t use his jump serve after hurting his hand before the match.
“It hurt not having his jump serve,” said Parker. “It would have been worth a couple of points, at least.”
SBCC is off for the next 12 days. They’ll open Western State Conference play on March 4 at El Camino.
