Austin, TEXAS – The No. 61 UCSB men’s tennis team could not get anything going against a competitive No. 2 Texas team Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the NCAA National Team Indoor tournament at UT’s Penick-Allison Tennis Center. The Longhorns swept the doubles point and then overpowered the weary Gauchos to end the match with a decisive 4-0 victory.
In doubles competition, Texas’ Ed Corrie and Kellen Damico shut down the No. 1 doubles of Philip Therp and Scott Hohenstein, 8-1. At the No. 2 spot, it was much of the same asJosh Finkelstein and Alex Konigsfeldt fell 8-4 to secure the doubles point for the Longhorns.
Texas would not let up in singles play either. UT’s Kellen Damico downed Alex Konigsfeldt 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 2 position while Ed Corrie topped Max Taylor 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 3 slot. The Longhorns completed the sweep of the Gauchos as the No. 4 spot where UT’s Miguel Reyes Valela made quick work of Scott Hohenstein 6-4, 6-4. With the outcome already decided, the rest of the matches were suspended.
The loss drops the Gauchos down to 0-2 on the season while the Longhorns improve to 3-0. UCSB will try and tackle No. 28 South Florida tomorrow in the back draw at the NCAA National Team Indoor tournament.
