The Carpinteria boys basketball team was unable to contain Fillmore’s Noah Aguirre as he led his team to a 59-53 victory Wednesday night.
Aguirre, Filmore’s all-time leading scorer, had 22 points overall, with 10 in the first quarter.
“I just didn’t have the kids prepared. We’ve never been hustled like that, especially in the first half,” admitted Warriors coach John Ward.
Trailing by 15 near the end of the first half, Kevin Lusterio took it upon himself to try and turn the game around, scoring five points to put Carpinteria within 11 at halftime.
The Warriors made a successful come back effort in the second half, tying the game at 42 and 44 in the fourth quarter, but Filmore made some tough shots.
Lusterio led Carpinteria with 18 points overall, making a total of four 3-pointers on the night.
“He played very well and was all over the floor,” said Ward.
Senior Justin Alvarado contributed eight points to the Warriors’ total and Manny Rodriguez chipped in 15.
According to Ward, “Alvarado played like a true warrior. Eight points, four assists, three rebounds, three steals, and one blocked shot… he really just played his heart out. I was proud of him.”
The loss was bittersweet for Carpinteria as the team finished one of its better seasons with a 15-11 overall record.
