Ventura’s girls soccer team broke Dos Pueblos’ heart with two minutes to go in the second overtime Friday, picking up a goal to grab a 1-0 victory and take the final playoff spot of the Channel League.
The Cougars were awared a penalty kick after Chargers goalie Meagan Bellefeuille slipped on the wet turf and was called for a foul. The junior nearly stopped the penalty before it got behind her. DP also had a goal called back earlier in the game due to a foul.
Coach Kymberly Williams-Evans said that Katie Boehm played a solid all-around match, and while the team graduates eight seniors, it returns five of six on its formidable back line. The first-year coach is very optimistic headed into her sophomore campaign.
Junior captain Kristen Witchey was injured early in Friday’s match, but Williams-Evans said that versatile sophomore Marina Plesons did a great job filling in for her. Plesons has played nearly every position for DP this year.
“I hadn’t worked with girls of this level before, and I was just so pleased with how they took direction. I think we’ll be even stronger next year,” she said.
The Chargers finish at 8-14-1.
