Chargers put Owls in their place

The Laguna Blanca girls soccer team had upset on the mind heading into Thursday’s game against Dos Pueblos, but the Chargers wouldn’t have anything to do with it.

Nicole Gee set the tone, netting a goal within five minutes of the opening whistle and the rest of the Chargers followed suit in a 5-3 non-league victory over the visiting Owls.

Kat Brontsema picked up Gee’s cue, posting two first-half scores. Brontsema’s first was a perfectly placed corner kick that curved into the goal. Marina Plesons added another just before halftime, and the Chargers were in command with a 4-2 halftime lead.

“They should change the title to ‘Bend it Like Brontsema,'” joked DP’s head coach Kymberly Williams-Evans.

“DP definitely is a legit team,” said Laguna head coach Gregg Luna, who got his first-half goals from Becca Braly and Lauren McAllister. “This game will pay dividends against Thacher on Saturday.”

The Owls (11-3-1, 3-0-1 Condor League) can clinch a playoff berth this weekend with a win over the Toads. Braly also put in the third goal for Laguna.

Dos Pueblos sophomore Erin Ristig did well in adding to DP’s total by skillfully out-manuevering Laguna’s keeper in a one-on-one situation and accurately putting her shot on goal.

The game was played on a muddy field at Scott O’Leary Stadium, but Luna said the rains cleared up a half an hour before kick-off and the field actually wasn’t too bad.

The Chargers (7-13-1, 2-5 CL) have only one game remaining on their regular season schedule, a virtual must-win Channel League game against Santa Barbara.
