Chargers nearly pull down No. 4 La Habra

The Dos Pueblos boys basketball team just missed pulling the upset on the road Wednesday night, letting No. 4 La Habra slip by 61-56 in overtime in the first round of the Division II-A CIF playoffs.

The Chargers were in position to win it with 19 seconds remaining after an Evan Munoz 3-pointer pushed DP ahead 50-47 – their biggest lead of the game.

But La Habra’s leading scorer, Jordan Sachs, answered with his own trey with time winding down to force overtime. Sachs, who will be playing for Westmont College next year, finished with a game-high 34 points.

Senior Robert Vickers led Dos Pueblos with 16 points. Munoz and Malik Heptot -also with 10 rebounds and two blocks – added nine each and Matt McClenathan and Evan Hamilton tallied eight apiece.

The Chargers were hindered by foul trouble all night. Heptot picked up two early ones and DP lost the services of swingman Jay Larinan to fouls in the fourth quarter.

Dos Pueblos completes its season with a record of 11-16 overall. The Chargers graduate five seniors: Vickers, Munoz, Hamilton, Bryan Heller and Gabe Renteria.

La Habra improves to 21-7.
