As Laguna Blanca’s boys basketball players were absorbing a season-ending loss in Merovick Gym Tuesday night, the school’s girls soccer team pulled into the parking lot on a victory bus.
Pint-sized freshman powerhouse Becca Braly scored in her sixth consecutive game for the Owls, who picked up a 4-0 win at Serra to advance to the CIF quarterfinals for the first time in school history.
“It feels great. I’m just glad to be a part of this team, and I don’t want it to end,” said Braly.
The Owls will host top-ranked Animo Leadership Academy on Thursday at 3 p.m. with a ticket to the semifinals on the line. Coach Gregg Luna isn’t worried about his team being intimidated.
“Anybody can beat anybody in our division, and our attitude is that every win from now on is just more icing on a great year,” he said. “The girls are basically saying ‘bring it on’ and I like that.”
Lauren McCallister scored in her second straight match for Laguna, as the Owls took a 1-0 lead at the half. Ari Rodriguez netted a score in a one-on-one situation for the second goal, and junior captain Erin Stone put away a left-footed beauty for the third. Braly made sure to get in the scoring column to close things out.
“We’ll be fine,” said Braly. “Our team is pretty unpredictable. I really don’t think there are any limits on our team.”
