Bishop loses battle of Cardinals, 48-41

Turnovers remained the thorn in the Bishop Diego boys basketball team’s side Wednesday, as the Cardinals fell to the visiting Santa Paula Cardinals 48-41.

Bishop had a 10-point lead in the second quarter, but committed three consecutive turnovers which led to six straight Santa Paula points. The same sequence would occur again in the second half.

“I thought at times we looked like a real good basketball team but we’re not there,” said coach Ray Vazquez.

AJ Fling scored a team-high 10 points for the hosts.

Despite now being 1-6 in the Frontier League, Vazquez plancs to petition CIF for a playoff spot at the end of the season, using an early win over Besant Hill as well as close battles against much bigger programs like Muir and Blair as backup. The Cardinals have been involved in numerous tight games throughout the season, and it would be a mighty help to beat Fillmore, Villanova and Grace Brethren to round out the season.

“We didn’t schedule many cupcakes in the preseason,” added Vazquez.
