Whistles get plenty of use in Carp victory

Amanda Burch and Caitlin Wallace combined for 32 points in Carpinteria’s 45-38 foul-festival victory over visiting Thacher Friday. The Warriors (9-5) had only five field goals in the game but made 26 of 37 free-throw attempts. The Toads committed 23 fouls on the night, while Carp was whistled for 20.

“It really wasn’t too physical of a game,” said Warriors coach Dan Mercer. “It was just a transition game with a lot of open-court fouls, particularly by Thacher.”

Toads star Mariah Erhart, whom Mercer said is capable of dropping 30 points any time she takes the court, was held to 17 thanks to the defense of Wallace and Nicole Pearce.

“Our strategy was to make her take tough shots and keep everyone else at bay,” said the coach.

Carpinteria takes a 4-game winning streak into Tuesday’s Frontier League opener at Malibu.
