Taryn Weiss scored on a rebound from a Jenny Ann Martinez shot for the San Marcos girls soccer team, but it was not nearly enough against Buena as the Bulldogs took the Channel League opener 5-1 at San Marcos Thursday.
The Royals fell behind two scores in the first half before Weiss’ strike pulled them within one of the Channel League favorites at halftime. Ali Raack found Martinez who got off a good shot that the Buena goal keeper couldn’t round up. Weiss was right there to clean up.
“They scored two more right away (after halftime). It’s hard to come back after that,” recalled San Marcos head coach Christy Lozano, whose team has a bye on Tuesday before hosting crosstown rival Dos Pueblos — which beat Ventura 1-0 on Thursday — next Thursday.
