Manny Rodriguez got the Warriors going by scoring 10 of his 24 points in the second quarter and the Carpinteria boys basketball team shook off a slow start to overcome Santa Paula 54-42 on Friday night.
The forward added 13 rebounds and was a perfect 2-for-2 from beyond the arc as the Warriors improved to 10-4 with one more non-league matchup to go before league starts on Friday against Santa Clara.
Carpinteria and Bishop Diego are scheduled to collide in the Brickhouse on Wednesday night.
Justin Alvarado scored 10 points and point guard Kevin Lusterio chipped in 11.
Anthony Del Rio had a team-high 13 points for Santa Paula.
Carpinteria head coach John Ward talked about his bench and the role it’s been playing.
“Our bench has done a very good job. They have played roles and filled roles very well,” said Ward, extolling the virtues of John Bustillos, Trevor Madden and Eric Price.
“That’s one of the reasons we are 10-and-4 and not 4-and-10.”
Madden led the reserves on Friday, scoring four points with three assists and three rebounds. The sophomore even stepped in to draw a charge.
The Warriors needed a team effort to come back and beat Santa Paula. Down 24-21 at halftime, Carpinteria made its move in the third quarter, outscoring the Cardinals 20-6.
Santa Paula never closed within nine in the fourth quarter.
