Carpinteria boys basketball head coach John Ward boiled down Friday’s 50-41 Tri-Valley League-opening loss at Santa Clara to one thing: rebounding.
“Fourteen-of-their-32 first-half points were off of offensive board putbacks,” complained Ward, whose Warriors managed only six total in the first two quarters. “Once we shored that up, we did very well against them in the second half.”
Manny Rodriguez led the Warriors with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Ward liked what he got in second-half performances, especially Justin Alvarado (8 points, five rebounds, three assists), and Isacc Cervantes (six points, three assists).
Carpinteria outscored the Saints – who Ward expects to ultimately win the TVL title this year – in final two periods but couldn’t make it all the way back.
Travis Robbins had a team-high 11 points for Santa Clara.
Carpinteria falls to 11-4 overall and Santa Clara is now 9-5. The Warriors have another road league game next, at Malibu on Wednesday.
