S.B. Pool League: Week 17

Individual Match Summaries

Creekside 1 [8] at Bak Dor 2 [7]
Host Bak Dor 2 battled back from a 7-5 deficit to tie their match with Creekside 1 at 7-7, and Bak Dor had their ace, “Super Mario” Reyes, up in the anchor spot, but Creekside’s Mike Linetsky had other plans as Linetsky beat Reyes to give Creekside an 8-7 victory.   This was a seesaw battle all the way; the match had 12 lead changes.   Linetsky and Mark Weingartner led Creekside with three wins each, while Bak Dor was led by Reyes and fellow two-game winners Rosalie Breeland and Rikki Byers.   This win was important for Creekside 1 (8-9) as it moves them into 6th place, the final playoff position.   10th place Bak Dor 2 fell to 5-12.

Don Q’s 1 [11] at Cliff Room 3 [4]
1st place Don Q’s 1 had little difficulty handling host Cliff Room 3; #1 Robert Rosa and #2 Jim Holloway both had three wins and Don Q’s cruised to an 11-4 victory.   Don Q’s 1 (16-1) next heads into a tough inter-division match with Monty’s 3.   Chris Smith led 11th place Cliff Room 3 (4-13) with two wins.

Moose Lodge [8] at Cliff Room 1 [7]
Cliff Room 1 was without their top shooter, David Clark, and it cost them as the Moose Lodge charged up to the Mesa and won 8-7.   Pat Wieser led Cliff Room with three wins, and after he won his last game, Cliff Room held a 7-6 lead.   However, two-game winners Chuy Martinez and Jorge Guerrero were able to close out the match with wins to lift the Moose to victory.   Bear Hernandez also had two wins for 5th place Moose Lodge (12-5), and teammate Juan Manzo rolled in his second break-and-run of the season.   The loss was costly for Cliff Room 1 (7-10) as it drops them into 7th place and currently out of playoff position.

Sportsman 1 [12] at Break Time 1 [3]
4th place Sportsman 1 brought the hammer with them to Break Time and used it effectively as they destroyed 3rd place Break Time 1 by a final of 12-3.   After Break Time’s George Guerrero got the first of his two game wins to cut Sportsman’s lead to 3-2, Sportsman ran wild with nine straight wins.   Leana Finley and Rick Hemmings led Sportsman with three wins each.   Finley’s 30 points moved her from 5th to 3rd place in A Division.   With the win, Sportsman improved to 11-6, while Break Time fell to 12-5.

Tiburon Tavern [2] at Monty’s 2 [13]
Andres Cortes had three wins and a table run to move him into a share of 4th place and lead Monty’s 2 to a 13-2 win over Tiburon Tavern.   After Tiburon’s Clint Dibala won to tie the score at 1-1, Monty’s won the next 11 games.   Mundo Burques and Alfonso Lazaro also had three wins for 2nd place Monty’s 2 (15-2).   Craig Keefer got the other game win for last place Tiburon (0-17).

Old Town Tavern [4] at Creekside 2 [11]
9th place Creekside 2 (5-12) and 10th place Old Town Tavern (4-13) traded places in the standings after Creekside crushed visiting Old Town by a score of 11-4.   Justin Brown, Keith Gruel, and Andrew Wood each had three wins to lead Creekside.   Rob Nowland had two wins for Old Town.   This match was over fast as Creekside sprinted out to an 8-1 lead.

Break Time 5 [12] at Sportsman 2 [3]
Mike Rys took over sole possession of 2nd place in B Division with three wins and a break-and-run and visiting Break Time 5 demolished Sportsman 2 by a score of 12-3.   Break Time left nothing to chance as they won the first 9 games of the match.   The only bright spot for Sportsman was the first career league break-and-run for captain Anthony Saenz.   Ed Martin also had three wins for Break Time 5 (13-4), who move up to 3rd place with the win.   Sportsman 2 (3-14) slipped back into a share of last place.

Cliff Room 2 [9] at Carp Billiards [6]
Fiesty Carp Billiards gave visiting Cliff Room 2 all they could handle, but Cliff Room proved too tough in the end as Jack Poet’s squad limped away with a 9-6 victory.   John James and Garet Watters each had two wins for last place Carp Billiards (3-14), and after 12 games the score was tied 6-6.   Three-game winners Nick Doerr and Brandon Teris then shut the door on Carp Billiards’ hopes with wins in the next two games.   6th place Cliff Room 2 improved their record to 10-7.

Cliff Room 4 [7] at Don Q’s 2 [8]
This match has to go down as an all-time classic.   #1 Cliff Room 4 visited #3 Don Q’s 2 at Break Time in a re-match of their controversial 8-7 contest last October.   Talk about a close match.   For the first time in recent memory, a match was played in which the lead changed hands after each of the 15 games.   Jim Zambelli got Don Q’s on the scoreboard first with a slick win over Fahim Azizi.   These two teams came prepared with boxes of fireworks, and they started to go off in the second game between Don Q’s Peter Garcia and Cliff Room’s Maurice Elias.   Cliff Room called a foul on Garcia, who vehemently disagreed.   The game continued, but Garcia was clearly livid long after he lost to Elias, and Garcia filed a protest on the score sheet.   The match proceeded in this back-and-forth fashion through the first 12 games.   Don Q’s goes ahead by one; Cliff Room ties the score.   Don Q’s goes ahead by one; Cliff Room ties the score.   It wasn’t until game 13 that Cliff Room was finally able to break the cycle and take their first lead of the match.   Cliff Room’s Terry Howell, frustrated after losing his first two games, was able to beat Don Q’s Ken Hilton to give Cliff Room a 7-6 lead.   Don Q’s captain Ismael Huerta, fresh off his big win in the monthly 9-ball tournament, had a very nice run-out to beat Fahim Azizi, sending the match to the hill-hill game between division #1 Maurice Elias and #6 Steve Myers.   Midway through the game, Myers executed an extremely difficult, 70-degree cut-combo that set himself up for the run-out that gave Don Q’s the win.   After the match, Elias granted Garcia’s request for a replay of the earlier game, but the result was the same.   Cliff Room’s Peter Tagles led all scorers with three wins.   Myers, Huerta, and Zambelli each had two wins to lead Don Q’s.   With the win, Don Q’s 2 (13-4) moved up to 2nd place in A Division, two matches behind front-running Cliff Room 4 (15-2).

Monty’s 3 [10] at Endless Summer [5]
Monty’s 3 was shaky in the beginning and end of their match at Endless Summer, but they were rock solid in the middle.   Two-game winners Adam Priddy and Skyler Stamegna both won their opening games to tie the score at 2-2, but heavily-favored Monty’s answered with 7 straight game wins to lock up the victory.   Kevin Farrell and Kerry Randolph led Monty’s with three wins each.   Monty’s 3 joined the quartet of B Division teams at 13-4.   With the loss by Old King’s Road 1, Monty’s was able to move up one spot to 4th place.   7th place Endless Summer fell to 6-11.

Old King’s Road 2 [6] at Break Time 2 [9]
In an inter-division battle between two equally matched teams, 8th place Break Time 2 was able to come from behind and edge 9th place Old King’s Road 2 by a final of 9-6.   Eric Kaiser and Bryan Lum both won their first two games to lead OKR to a 5-3 lead.   Three-game winner Ed Ogden helped Break Time win the next four games and go on the hill at 7-5.   Ian Cox kept the hope alive for OKR with a win in game 13, but captain Bob Freed followed with a win to put Break Time over the top.   Break Time’s Avonell Ogden ended her 10-game losing streak with wins in her last two games of the night.   Both teams’ records are now 5-12.

Monty’s 1 [9] at Old King’s Road 1 [6]
Jesse Oliver and Ernesto Sanchez both had three wins for Monty’s 1 in a stunning 9-6 upset win at Old King’s Road 1.   Monty’s 1 put OKR in an early 4-0 hole and simply never let them out for the rest of the match.   Pete Conover and Rachel Johnson both had two wins for Old King’s Road 1 (13-4), who dropped all the way from 2nd to 5th place in B Division.   With the win, Monty’s 1 (7-10) not only moved up to 7th place, but they now have a very legitimate shot at snagging the sixth and final A Divison playoff position.
