The Santa Barbara girls water polo team got a little piece of revenge on Saturday, beating Long Beach Wilson 7-1 to lighten up an otherwise rough Tournament of Champions.
The Dons ended up in 14th place after a 9-7 defeat to Carlsbad, but beat Wilson after losing to the Bruins in a pre-tournament warmup on Thursday.
“It was good for us to turn around and redeem ourselves,” said head coach Mark Walsh, who thought his team did a great job on the defensive end, recording a season-best in goals allowed.
Makenzy Fowler scored three times for Santa Barbara and added three steals and three drawn ejections. Olivia Cusimano had two assists and a goal. Goalkeeper Chloe Brooks recorded nine saves and held the Bruins scoreless until the fourth quarter.
Against Carlsbad, Walsh didn’t like the defensive showing nearly as much. Santa Barbara outscored Carlsbad in the second half but couldn’t overcome a 6-3 halftime deficit.
Samantha King had a nice all-around game, with two goals, two steals and three assists. Charlotte Hendrix had a team-high three steals and a score.
The Dons (6-11) return to Channel League play with a Tuesday tilt with Buena.
