San Marcos’ Mendoza goes off for 31 points

Jeannette Mendoza scored 31 points — the highest total of any San Marcos girls basketball player in 14 years— on Saturday in the Royals’ 58-56 win at Camarillo.

The 5-7 senior went 10-for-15 from the floor and also grabbed 10 rebounds on the night, helping the Royals overcome seven 3-pointers from Camarillo.

“There weren’t any jumpers. She was just getting to the basket and really kept us in the game,” said coach Kristyn Miller.

Kimmy Sanchez added 14 points and Claudia Ochoa pulled down nine boards.

“This is a great win for us, and getting up to seven wins on the season is a big deal. We need to carry this into the brutal week ahead,” said Miller.

The Royals face Ventura on Tuesday, Buena on Thursday and Pacifica on Saturday.

Despite Camarillo providing a relatively even matchup size-wise, San Marcos dominated the rebounding end with a 41-19 advantage. Miller said that Camarillo turned up the pressure and had runs to start both halves, but the Royals stuck around and began to play smarter defense.

“Hopefully Jeannette can give us a few more nights like tonight in the coming week,” said Miller.
