Zach Belway took home yet another title for San Marcos on Saturday, winning five matches to win the 173-pound weight division at the San Fernando Tournament – his fourth championship of the season.
The Royals finished ninth overall out of 24 teams in the one-day event. Channel League powerhouse Ventura placed first.
In the final, Belway handed Simi Valley’s Kyle Hasan (24-1) his first defeat by decision 12-2. His other four wins all came on pins and his coach Tony Becerra thinks the final could have been called a pin too.
Either way, Belway improves his season record to 30-2.
Luis Urbina posted a third-place result in the heavyweight class, pinning Costa Mesa’s Sola Hola in 3 minutes and 53 seconds. Urbina enjoyed a gratifying win when he beat a Ventura wrestler who had beaten him in a dual meet last week.
Jake Jourdan placed sixth amongst heavyweights.
Lious Giroux gave the Royals another top finish in fifth-place. He went 4-1 on the day.
Next up on San Marcos’ schedule is a dual meet with Buena on Thursday.
Elsewhere, San Marcos’ Mallory Fleishman – the only female prep wrestler in the Santa Barbara area – wrestled in a CIF playoff this weekend, going 3-1 on Friday before being eliminated on Saturday.
