San Marcos’ Julian Lake made his coach proud with a major decision against Ventura in a Channel League wrestling dual match Thursday night.
Ventura won the match 59-16.
Lake, wrestling at 191 pounds, defeated David Mitchell 16-6 after getting pinned by Mitchell in the first period at a recent tournament.
Luis Urbina was another Royal who showed tremendous improvement against the powerful Cougars. He lost his 287-pound match to Ben Wiltjer by a 2-0 score after being pinned by the same opponent earlier at a tournament.
“One escape was the difference in the match,” said coach Tony Becerra. “It’s good to see those guys make a turnaround.”
Felipe Roman suffered a tough defeat at 121 pounds. Roman and Josh Pain were in a tight battle when Pain pulled a last-second reversal to escape with a 7-6 decision.
The Royals got pins from Jordan Bishop at 147 pounds and Zach Belway at 173.
“We started off 24 points in the hole,” Becerra said. “We gave it our best shot.”
