Jenny Ann Martinez and Taryn Weiss were movers and shakers for the San Marcos girls soccer team on Thursday, propping up the Royals with two goals each in a 4-1 trouncing of crosstown rival Dos Pueblos in a Channel League matchup.
Weiss opened up the scoring 10 minutes before halftime with a left-footed shot that reached its target, sailing just under the crossbar.
The game really opened up in the final 40 minutes, with the Royals tacking on three more scores before Dos Pueblos’ Michelle Gee finally broke through for the Chargers.
“Whenever you get goals it gets momentum for you and kinda takes away some of their energy,” said Martinez, who scored the second and fourth San Marcos goals.
San Marcos improves to 4-7-2 on the season and evens its Channel League record at 1-1. Dos Pueblos falls to 5-10 and 1-2 in league.
“We got pumped up,” simplified Weiss, whose second goal was another long-range blast – this one a 20-yarder from the right side of goal that went over the goalie’s head, hitting the left side net from an impossible angle.
“What happended is that, instead of playing as a unit – which we’ve been doing – we were playing individual games,” said DP’s head coach Kymberly Williams-Evans. “They needed to keep a commonality of intensity.”
Junior Michelle Gee finally broke through for Dos Pueblos in the 33rd minute of the second half, making sure the Royals didn’t make it a shutout.
“I just jumped in front of someone and turned the ball and penetrated through some girls and then kicked it in to the far-left post,” described Gee. “Definitely scoring on San Marcos is something what every person wants to do. So I’m glad I got to do that. I’m happy, I know we’re going to beat them next time.
“I’m OK with losing because I know next time we’re going to get them, because we didn’t play a good game today.”
Despite the relatively easy 4-1 win, the Royals aren’t going to let the Chargers sneak up on them next time though.
“We have a lot of respect for them and they’ve had a great season so far. Their program has been getting better and better every year,” said Martinez, who know the Chargers are better than what they displayed on Thursday. “They’ve had it click a few times, and as soon as they get it clicking more they’re going to be great. I mean, they put up a good fight tonight.”
The rematch is slated for Feb. 3 at Dos Pueblos, the second-to-last regular season game for both teams.
