Oscar Montes’ late score upended defending CIF champion Oaks Christian on Monday, as Carpinteria came home with a hard-fought 1-0 Tri-Valley League win.
Montes’ goal came in the 79th minute on a play that started with sophomore goalie Hans Pluma. The keeper cleared a ball to Ismael Soriano who sent Montes on a break-away run that Montes caught up with and chipped the ball into the Oaks Christian goal.
Warrior head coach Daniel Torres said the man of the match was Pluma, who made several crucial saves, including two in the final few minutes of play.
“He came up big twice,” said Torres, whose team improves to 9-3, 2-0 in league. “It easily could have been 1-0 or 2-0 them.
“Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than to be good!”
Carpinteria returns home on Wednesday for another Tri-Valley League game against Fillmore.
