Late run lifts Warriors to 1-point win

Caitlin Wallace scored a game-high 22 points for the Carpinteria girls basketball team in a 44-43 non-league victory over Hueneme, but it was the Warriors team that put together an 11-0 run at near the end of the game to capture the come-from-behind win.

With Carpinteria trailing 33-40 and five minutes left on the clock, five different Warriors scored to take a four-point lead over the Vikings. Myriah Diaz put on the finishing touch with a driving layup for a 44-40 lead.

Hueneme had one final gasp, getting within one with a free throw to tie it but it was missed.

Carpinteria improves to 8-5 and plays on Friday at home against Thacher.

Warriors head coach Dan Mercer said a big reason they were able to rally was the defense from Nicole Pearce. The senior shut down Hueneme’s leading scorer in Anyessa Riley, who had 17 points through the first 2 1/2 quarters but none after that.

Carpinteria did a good job of taking care of the ball with only nine turnovers. The rebound advantage was also impressive, 27 to Hueneme’s 13.
