Jimenez, Aijian lift Cards past Patriots

Jennifer Jimenez scored 13 points and Heather Aijian added 12 Thursday as the Bishop Diego girls basketball team won its Frontier League opener at Viewpoint, 47-35.

It was closer than expected, as the Patriots did not have standout Isabel Brougham the first time Cardinals coach Jeff Burich saw them play. Bishop took a 15-1 lead into the second quarter, but Brougham would make it a game, scoring 16 points in the second and third periods.“She just exploded. She reminded me a lot of Lyndsay Pearson from San Marcos. She just dribbled right through us,” said Burich.

Pearson, who graduated last year, is now on scholarship as a hurdler at the University of Oregon, so being compared to her is quite a compliment.

Bishop stayed ahead despite an abysmal night from the field, going 3-for-19 from long range and 16-for 65 overall. The Patriots, however, were a meager 6-of-22 from the free-throw line.

Mercer said that Aijian and Jimenez did an excellent job of bailing the Cardinals out, as the visitors committed 24 turnovers on the night. That will be an emphasis in practice leading up to Tuesday’s game against Santa Clara, considered the favorite to win the league.
