San Marcos held strong on the road against first-place Buena on Tuesday, until the Bulldogs had a burst of second-half goals and left with a 2-0 victory.
“Buena is an aggressive team, big and strong,” said San Marcos head coach Christy Lozano, who commented that “it’s always a fight” with the Bulldogs.
While Tuesday’s defeat was not as harsh as their last match up – a 5-1 decision – Buena scored about 20 minutes into the second half and then again with a corner kick two minutes before the final whistle.
The Bulldogs continue to dominate the Channel League with a 4-0 record (6-4-2 overall).
Despite their loss, goalie Kaitlyn Mendoza blocked a lot of shots while Lizzy Willett and Hayden Pugh connected and passed well during the game, said Lozano.
“We’re feeling growing pains but plan to rebuild strong by next year,” Lozano said, mentioning that it’s been a restructuring year for San Marcos as the Royals lost eight starters from last year.
Captain Jenny Martinez was out from an eye injury.
The next game for San Marcos (4-10-2) is at Dos Pueblos Tuesday.
