The No. 17 UCSB women’s water polo team opened the season with two wins and a loss at the Lancer Invite hosted by Cal Baptist on Saturday. The Gauchos (2-1) fell 13-9 to No. 18 Cal State Bakersfield before posting convincing wins over Cal State San Bernardino and Concordia later in the day.
During the first game of the day, Bakersfield built a 3-0 lead before junior Katlin Kubas scored the Gauchos’ first goal with 1:03 on the clock in the first quarter. The Roadrunners scored two more goals in the last minute of the period to gain a 5-1 lead.
Within the first minute of the second quarter, UCSB posted back-to-back goals from Lizzie Rouleau and Amanda Tipton to cut Bakersfield’s lead to two points. The Roadrunners responded with two goals of their own, stretching their lead to 7-3. Alisha Khan tallied the last point of the first half with 1:29 to go in the second, putting UCSB within three.
Bakersfield outscored UCSB 6-5 during the second half to capture the 13-9 win. Khan led the Gauchos with three goals while Chelsea Carrillo posted five saves for UCSB.
In the second game of the day against Cal State San Bernardino, UCSB quickly built a 3-0 lead within the first two minutes of the game and by the end of the first quarter, the Gauchos held a 6-1 advantage. The Gauchos allowed just one goal from San Bernardino in each of the four quarters, all from Kaitlin Hartman, on their way to a 17-4 win.
Rouleau led the team with three goals in the win and Kate Murphy posted nine saves for the Gauchos.

During the final contest of the day, Concordia got on the board first with a five-meter penalty goal from Sam Gelberger with 5:41 on the clock in the first. Concordia stretched its lead to 2-0 behind a goal from Danielle O’Toole. Gillian Morgan posted the Gauchos’ first goal of the game with 3:25 to go in the first and Rouleau followed up with a six-on-five goal to tie things up at 2-2. The teams traded goals in the last minute and a half of the first to carry a 3-3 tie into the second quarter.
In the second quarter, the Gauchos outscored Concordia 3-1 to capture a 6-4 lead heading into halftime and held their opponent to just one goal in the last 16 minutes of the game to take the 13-5 win.
Rouleau once again led the team in the win with four goals while Murphy posted six saves.
The Gauchos will return to action on Feb. 7 when they travel to the UC San Diego Triton Invite. UCSB is scheduled to take on Big West Conference foe Cal State Northridge in the tournament’s first round at 12:45 pm.
