There was no letdown or lack of energy for the Dos Pueblos girls water polo team in its first game after the weekend’s flawless performance in the Tournament of Champions, as the Chargers took care of host San Marcos 9-2 on Tuesday to improve to 13-2 overall and 4-0 in the Channel League.
Despite losing handily, Royals coach Brian Roth was very pleased with the play of his team.
“I told the kids that I was going to coach this game like it was the most important game of the year,” he said.
“For all intensive purposes, this is the best team we’re going to play all year. So if that’s the case then we’re going to come out and play the very best we can. I thought we did some things good today and there are still some things we need to work on.”
Amanda Redfern scored just 12 seconds into the game for DP, which took a 4-0 lead after the first period. Jade Fitzgerald got San Marcos on the board in the second quarter, and sophomore Brittny Hummel scored the other late in the game on a pretty shot from about seven meters out. Roth was particularly pleased with the strong play of Hummel in the game.
In all, the Royals got off 25 shots on the day, a promising sign against a defense as dominant as Dos Pueblos’. Roth was keeping a careful eye on how many Royal shots were tipped by DP goalie Sami Hill and sent out of bounds.
“She’s phenomenal, so a tip-out against her is a sure goal against another goalie,” he said.
Kiley Neushul led DP with four goals.
