Jonathan Fisher scored five minutes into his varsity career on Tuesday but it wasn’t enough to lift the Dos Pueblos boys soccer team over No. 3 Ventura, as the Cougars came away with a 2-1 win.
“The play was relatively even. Ventura is a great team, and I think we kind of caught them on an off-day,” said DP coach Tovi Eliasen. “If we would have put two full halves together I think we could have beaten them.”
The first half was slow for both teams, and Eliasen said that the rough condition of the field might have had something to do with it. DP made what he described as “a simple mistake” in the 21st minute that allowed Ventura to get on the board.
In the 54th, a strong-armed Cougar tossed a long-distance throw-in right to a teammate’s head for the goal to go up 2-0.
Fisher, a recent call-up from the JV squad, came in the game and scored two minutes later on a shot that came at the end of about five passes.
“That was a quality team goal, and I think it was important for us because we were in danger of hanging our heads,” said Eliasen.
The Chargers are to 0-3-2 in Channel League play.
