Double OT doesn’t go in Vaqs’ favor

Three days after extending No. 1 Ventura to overtime, SBCC found itself in another overtime women’s basketball affair on Saturday night at Moorpark.

The Vaqueros (18-11, 4-2) capped the first round of WSC North action with a 73-69 double-overtime defeat. It was the third time they’ve faced Moorpark this season and the first win for the Raiders (11-11, 3-2).

Francesca DeAngelis paced the Vaqueros with 15 points and Jen Ju had 13. SBCC, which made just 32.2 percent of its shots (29-90), trailed 25-22 at halftime.

“After a tough OT loss to top-ranked and unbeaten Ventura, we came down here for another tough game against a team we’d already beaten twice,” said coach Sandrine Krul, who was co-coach at Moorpark before coming to SBCC in 2004. “It’s a growing and learning experience. This will help us in the long run.

“Going 4-2 in the first round is respectable.”

SBCC led by two with 20 seconds to go in regulation before “missing a defensive assignment” that led to the game-tying basket. Near the end of the first OT, the Vaqueros were up by three when Moorpark’s Tiffany Hurd nailed a 3-pointer with four seconds left.

“The kids are fighting, we’re not upset about a lack of effort,” Krul concluded. “We’re just not bringing the mental toughness to the defensive end.”
