Chargers can’t climb out of hole against Bulldogs

It was one of those night for Dos Pueblos, and it left the Chargers 0-2 in the Channel League boys basketball race for the first time since the 2005-06 season.

DP went 1-for-16 from beyond the arc in Friday’s 47-43 loss to Buena, falling behind 13-3 after the first quarter and never fully recovering.

“They came out ready to play and we had a slow start… We talked about playing as a whole team,” said coach Joe Zamora. “Nobody’s blowing us out, but it’s just the little things.”

Dos Pueblos’ big thing — 6-foot-9 center Malik Heptot — had a game-high 16 points but was hit with a technical in the second and fouled out with about four minutes left in the game.

“That hurt us, because they started to go into their big guy when we didn’t have Malik in there,” said Zamora.

Sophomore Jay Larinan was a bright spot for DP, coming off the bench for 11 points.

“I love my team because they are great kids and they never give up, but we have to execute on the offensive end. We didn’t look the way we were supposed to, and we need to find our identity instead of trying to have one or two players carry the load,” said the coach.

The Chargers (9-8, 0-2) play at San Marcos on Friday night. Buena improves to 6-11, 1-1.
