Cardinals end skid by crushing Lancers

Someone was going to get their first Frontier League win, and Bishop Diego got it in a big way.

The Cardinals’ boys hoops team used a 26-2 second quarter to pull away from host Grace Brethren, ending up with a 73-39 win that ended a 13-game losing streak. The Lancers and Cards both came into the contest at 0-4 in league.

Hayden Slaught scored in every quarter en route to a game-high 17 points, while Sam Kwock finished with 15 points, 10 steals and five rebounds.

“He was the difference. In the last three league games he’s really been coming up,” said coach Ray Vazquez.

“We hadn’t won in a long time and we didn’t really know what it looked like. We knew they had this game circled on their schedule too.”

Paul Garcia had nine points with six assists and only two turnovers, and Elias Muñoz shook off a cold to score all nine of his points in the first quarter.

Bishop has played four of its five Frontier League games on the road, and still has a shot at the playoffs as things head back to the ol’ Brickhouse.

They’re all circled now, and second-place Nordhoff is up next.
