One of Bishop Diego’s girls soccer players went down with a possible concussion in the second half of Tuesday’s game, and coach Brent Gonsalves was puzzled when Santa Paula was awarded with a free kick near Bishop’s box.
The free kick went in to break a 3-3 tie and the wheels fell off after that, with Santa Paula winding up with an 8-3 win.
Gonsalves explained that in a new high school rule this year, an injury leads to a free kick for whichever team had possession at the time of the stoppage of play. He said that Bishop clearly had possession at the time, but the call went the other way.
To Santa Paula’s credit, their star player was bigger and faster than anyone Bishop has faced this year, according to Gonsalves, and she scored five goals in the game.
Candace Melgoza, Allison Carr and Natalie Durtche found the back of the net for Bishop Diego, which faces another possible high-scoring affair at Villanova on Thursday.
