Buena a bit too much for Chargers, 63-46

The young Dos Pueblos girls basketball team found itself down only five points to a state-ranked powerhouse Wednesday, but playing two such teams in two days was too much.

A day after opening Channel League play against Ventura, the Chargers (10-8, 0-2) fell to Buena 63-46 despite a stellar performance from lone senior Meghan Murphy, who went 9-for-11 from the charity stripe and scored 17 points.

Star freshman Jessica Escalante — who is headed to Carolina for the national championships of the Punt, Pass and Kick competition this weekend — found herself in foul trouble, and with only seven girls on the roster it was nearly impossible for DP to keep up with might Buena.

The Bulldogs pulled down a whopping 27 offensive rebounds.

The Chargers, however, beat the Bulldogs 16-12 in the second quarter and 12-11 in the fourth.

“We beat them in two quarters but we were really shell-shocked from the beginning with their full-court pressure,” said coach Maynard Pilapil, who is the only coach in DP girls hoops history to have beaten Buena (13-5, 2-0).

The good news is that Escalante will be back in time for Tuesday’s game against San Marcos.

“We’re all planning on watching it and we all wished her well,” said Pilapil.
