Scoring goals hasn’t been a problem from the Bishop Diego girls soccer team this season. But the Cardinals have had a tough time keeping balls out of their own net.
That’s how things went on Thursday as Bishop fell to Villanova 5-4 in overtime in a Frontier League match in Ojai.
We’re great going forward,” Bishop coach Brent Gonsalves said. “We get laxed defensively and we’re undisciplined at times.”
The Cardinals (2-9, 0-2) took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute on a goal from Mariel Santana, but Villanova responded with three unanswered goals.
Candace Melgoza cut the lead to one, scoring off a corner kick in the 63rd minute. Three minutes later, Michelle Salazar evened the score at 3-3 with a blast from 25 yards.
Villanova went back in front 4-3 on a free kick that Gonsalves said was the result of a “mysterious call.”
The Cardinals scrambled back and tied the score on a goal by Natalie Duretzhe in the 77th minute.
In the overtime, Bishop had a goal nullified by an offsides call before Villanova scored the game winner with one minute left in the second five-minute period.
“It was a great game, but it was a heartbreaker,” said Gonsalves.
