Westmont women’s basketball suffered its first loss of the season in what was also its first Golden State Athletic Conference game of the year. The Warriors (7-1, 0-1 GSAC) lost by a score of 64-60 to Concordia (6-1, 2-0 GSAC) in Irvine.
“It was a tough basketball game,” said Westmont head coach Kirsten Moore. “Concordia works hard and hustles and we work hard and hustle so it was a well fought game. I think we won the battle of toughness in the first half and they won the battle of toughness in the second half.”
The Warriors took a 21-9 lead halfway through the opening frame, but Concordia produced a 14-2 run to tie the game at 23-23 with 3:20 remaining on the first-half clock. In the final three minutes, junior guard Jessica Case nailed two of her four first-half three-pointers as the Warriors closed out the half with an 8-4 run, resulting in a halftime score of 31-27.
“Turnovers hurt us in the first half and giving up offensive rebounds and second-chance points hurt us in the second half,” said Moore. “Concordia played hard and deserves the credit for the win.”
Westmont returns to Murchison Gymnasium on the Westmont campus on Saturday for its second GSAC game. The Warriors will host Hope International (0-4, 0-1 GSAC) at 5:30 p.m. as part of a men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader.
“Our team is very determined,” noted Moore. “In the locker room after the game, they were even more determined than they were before.”
