Warriors suffer from slow start again

Just as it had done in Monday’s season-opener, the Carpinteria girls basketball team had a poor first half followed by a strong second half — just not strong enough.

The Warriors scored only 11 points before the break and 24 after it Thursday in a 46-35 loss to Milken Community in the Viewpoint Tournament.

“It was almost a textbook copy of the first game,” said coach Dan Mercer.

Caitlin Wallace and Amanda Burch scored 13 of their combined 17 points in the second half, which was encouraging as the team will rely on the two player for a large chunk of the offensive production this year.

“I think some of the girls just need game-experience,” said Mercer. “We have only four girls with varsity experience, so this preseason’s going to have some growing pains, but I think we’ll get there.”
