Caitlin Wallace and Nicole Pearce each had 12 points for the Carpinteria girls basketball team, but the Warriors couldn’t crawl all the way back from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter and fell to Providence 40-32 in the first round of the Viewpoint Tournament Monday.
“We were rusty in the beginning and missed a lot of layups, otherwise it would have been our game,” said coach Dan Mercer.
The Pioneers went up 10 in the final period before Carpinteria put on a full-court press and got back to within four, but the Warriors couldn’t get back to even.
“We’re a very emerging team, because we have four veterans and seven new girls with a lot of athletic talent,” said Mercer, who has a good mix of size and speed this year.
Jaclyn Guerrero grabbed a team-high five rebounds in the contest. The Warriors continue play in the tournament on Thursday.
