Bishop Diego and Carpinteria played their second girls soccer rivalry game of the season on Friday at the Villanova Tournament, and the Warriors pulled away with a 4-1 win, the exact same result as last Wednesday’s meeting between the two.
This time, they only needed 45 minutes to settle the score, as all five goals came in the first half.
Catherine Hough scored off of a cross from Joselyn Gamez just three minutes in to put Carpinteria (3-3-1) on the board. Twenty-one minutes later, Maritza Torres found the back of the net off of a feed from Ally Winn, and sophomore Nicole Graham added another a minute later with her left foot.
Bishop freshman Nicole Tetherow scored the Cardinals’ only goal in the 34th minute to cut the Carpinteria lead to 3-1, but Carpinteria wasn’t done.
In the 37th, Melissa Sanchez was fouled outside the box and Gamez lined up to take the free kick. She launched one near the goal and it eventually found Sanchez, who booted it in.
“She got her revenge,” joked coach Lucy Carleton, adding that she was happy with her team’s balance in the game.
“We had four different girls score, and three that hadn’t scored yet this season, so I was very happy with that,” she said.
Carleton also praised the defense of Viridiana Magana.
Bishop Diego (1-4) coach Brent Gonzalves had a simple explanation on the Cardinal side of things.
“We just had a very bad game. Sometimes I think we have a mental block when we play Carp… It just wasn’t our day, and Carp was better,” he said.
Bishop standout Candace Melgoza was limited to six minutes on field due to an ankle injury. Both teams continue tournament play on Saturday.
