Caitlin Wallace scored a combined 39 points as the Carpinteria girls basketball team shook off an 0-2 start with two wins in the Viewpoint Tournament, beating St. Genevieve 41-37 Friday and Viewpoint 44-35 on Saturday.
“I think this tournament was perfect for us, because all four games were decided by 11 points or less,” said coach Dan Mercer. “We got a great chance to mix-and-match some of our younger and older players and see how they play in different situations.”
Wallace —who also had 15 rebounds over the two games — earned all-tournament honors, and the Warriors got solid performances from a host of other players. Amanda Burch returned from an offseason injury and started to find her game, scoring nine and 10 points respectively in the two wins.
Coach Mercer was also happy with the post pay of Gina Targoni as well as the development of Nicole Pearce who had nine points Saturday and was “very solid” throughout the weekend.
The Warriors got off to their third consecutive slow start in Friday’s contest, falling behind 16-6 after the first quarter. They turned the tables, however, winning the second quarter 16-8 and the third 9-3 before holding on with a 10-10 tie in the fourth.
Mercer said the key to the victory was a 29-17 rebounding edge by Carpinteria, as well as solid containment of St. Genevieve’s outside game.
The Warriors host La Reina on Tuesday, with tipoff set for 7 p.m.
