The San Marcos boys basketball team picked up its first win of the year, then played its best half of the year and split a pair of games Saturday to finish fourth in the San Luis Obispo High School Kiwanis Tournament.
Chris Vines had 22 points and 12 rebounds, nailing 3-of-5 from beyond the arc in the Royals’ 51-46 win over El Segundo, and Nick Marquez returned from SAT testing in the morning to pour in 19 points in a loss to a strong Ocean View team.
San Marcos fell behind 15-6 in the first quarter against El Segundo, but handed out a donut in the second, outscoring the Eagles 16-0. Vines had the responsibility of guarding El Segundo’s top-scorer Brandon Jawato, and held the senior 11 points under his average with only six.
Shane Moore also went 3-for-5 from long range in the game, and coach Jarrod Bradley said that Christian Rios played a solid game at point, making all four of his free throws down the stretch.
Marquez put down the pencil and got the Royal of to a stellar first half, scoring 15 of his 19 in the first two quarters. The senior had four assists and went 8-for-13 from the field. Vines earned all-tournament honors, scoring 51 points in four games, while Marquez equaled that tally over three contests.
“I think the abiity to play against pressure helped us get a lot done,” said Bradley.”We only have two returners that have seen varsity minutes, so this tournament has been invaluable for them.”
