UCSB swimmers knock down three more records

 

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. — The UCSB swim teams posted three more school records on Saturday, the third and final day of the Husky Invitational, which is being hosted by Washington at the King County Aquatics Center. Anne Marie May broke her own record in the 100 freestyle, Chris Good broke his previous record in the 200 back and the Gaucho women set a new 400 free relay record during Saturday evening’s finals.

Good took fourth in the 200 backstroke, breaking his own school record in the event with a time of 1:46.42, which is a .27 second improvement upon his previous record. Ryan Garcia also made the final in the event and took seventh in 1:49.41, a season-best time for the freshman.

The following event was the 100 freestyle and the Gaucho records continued to fall asAnne Marie May took first with a mark of 48.83 surpassing her previous record of 49.13 while also meeting the NCAA “B” qualifying standard in the event. Courtney Bauer (50.42) and Nadia Dwidar (50.64) finished second and third, respectively, in the event.

Three men qualified for the 100 free final and Scott Vogelgesang turned in the top Gaucho finish, placing fourth with a time of 44.59. Kevin Kuhn finished sixth with a time of 44.65, though he posted a 44.26 earlier in the day during the event’s preliminary heats.Joe Wood took eighth with a mark of 45.24, adding .13 seconds to his prelims time. 
Katy Freeman followed with a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke, touching the wall in 2:11.35, which easily makes the NCAA “B” qualifying standard.Sara Nicponski also met the “B” standard with her time of 2:14.38; she took fourth in the event.

In the men’s 200 breast, Travis Jepson placed fifth with a time of 2:02.77. He turned a season-best mark of 2:01.68 earlier in the day during the event’s prelims.

In the final individual event of the meet, Kelsey Lewis took seventh in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:02.41. Erin Yamamoto turned in the Gauchos’ best time though, taking first in the event’s “B” final with a time of 2:00.62.

On the men’s end, Danny McClary placed second in the 200 fly, touching the wall in 1:47.20. His teammate, Chris Wiggin, finished sixth clocking in at 1:49.01.

Earlier in the evening, Astrid Amsallem got things rolling in the 1650 freestyle as she captured the Gauchos’ first points of the day with a seventh-place finish. She clocked in at 17:03.05, beating out teammate Meagan Brown, who finished ninth in 17:09.92. In the men’s 1650, Ethan Bradley turned in the top UCSB finish, taking fifth with a time of 15:39.91.

The final event of the meet was the 400 free relay. The UC Santa Barbara women set their fourth relay record of the weekend when the “A” relay team consisting of Naomi Javanifard, Dwidar, Bauer and May finished in a school record-setting time of 3:20.26, which also meets the NCAA “B” qualifying standard. They broke a record that was set last season by the team of Bauer, Dwidar, Yamamoto and May.

The men’s 400 free “A” relay was disqualified during their final. The “B” team of Wood, Kevin FergusonTyler Haydenand Bradley Matsumoto finished in 3:01.62.

The Gauchos men placed third out of 10 teams with 1,077.5 points. The women took third place out of 12 squads with their 1,130.5 points. The winner on the men’s side was Cal with 1,442 points and the women’s winner was USC with 1,418 points.

The Gauchos will take a break from action until the New Year. They will open 2009 with a dual meet at USC on Jan. 10 at 1 p.m.
