Turnovers catch up with Cardinals

For the third-straight game, the Bishop Diego boys basketball team took a lead into the locker room at halftime only to lose out on victory in the end. ‘On Tuesday, the Cardinals fell to Northwood 59-46 on the final day of the Santa Barbara Holiday Classic.

“The turnovers were really killing us in the second half,” stated Cardinals head coach Ray Vazquez, saying he challenged his team at halftime to keep its total turnovers for the game at 12 or under after only turning it over seven times in the first half.

But Bishop showed its inexperience and coughed the ball up 17 times in the second half, finishing off an 0-4 tournament.

Yet Vazquez believed playing in the Holiday Classic’s strong field will only help the Cardinals with league just ahead.

“As far as our league is concerned, we’ll be more than ready for the opponents we’ll face,” said the confident coach, who praised the work of seniors Scott Kohler and Art Gonzalez against Northwood.

Elias Munoz led Bishop Diego (5-8) with nine points and Andy Nevarez posted a team-high eight rebounds.

Before league, the Cardinals have a rivalry game on Wednesday at home versus Carpinteria.
