The Bishop Diego girls soccer team probably doesn’t want to see any more of Carpinteria’s Maritza Torres this season after the Warrior had her foot in on every score with a goal and three assists in a 4-1 victory over the visiting Cardinals on Wednesday.
Teammate Yadira Saldana had her head in on just about everything else, connecting with Torres for two first-half headers off set-piece corner kicks.
“She was very active,” Carpinteria head coach Lucy Carleton said of Torres, who also scored an insurance goal in the second half and set up the Warriors’ first goal, that one from junior Joselyn Gamez.
“It was exciting that in the first half we scored on two of our three corners,” said Carleton. “We had worked on that yesterday in practice.”
Carpinteria (2-0) benefited from already having a 2-1 victory over Santa Clara under their belts. For Bishop Diego, it was the season opener.
“We came out with the right intention, but because it was the first game of the season we had a lot of errors,” conceded Cardinals head coach Brent Gonsalves, whose Fronteir League team was un underdog against the Tri-Valley League Warriors.
Jenni Ortiz scored for the Cardinals, bringing Bishop to within 3-1 six minutes before halftime.
“I liked how we settled down at the ending of the first half. I liked that we played stronger in the second half. I like that we attacked a lot,” continued Gonsalves.
“There’s a lot of positives to take out of that.”
