The Santa Ynez girls basketball team — once a top-flight program — improved to 1-11 with its first win Monday against San Marcos, 54-35, in Green Division play at the Tournament of Champions.
Royals assistant Alex Sheldon didn’t have much to say:
“We’re not playing very good basketball right now.”
Jeannette Mendoza returned from injury and scored seven points, and Kimmy Sanchez matched that total, but the Royals found themselves trailing 29-10 at the half and couldn’t climb back. They shot 6-for-33 from inside the arc and 4-for-25 from long distance.Santa Ynez, on the other had, hit 14 of its 19 free-throws and put up 20 points in the second quarter.
The Royals (5-7) play in Rosamond on Tuesday morning at 9 a.m.
