San Marcos’ girls water polo team finished 16th out of 32 teams in the Villa Park Tournament Saturday after losing an 8-6 match against Bonita and a 19-14 decision to Arlington.
“That’s the highest-scoring game I think we’ve ever been in,” said coach Brian Roth, who noted that all 15 teams that finished ahead of the Royals have been to a CIF title game in the last five years.
The Royals (2-4) fell behind 7-1 in the first quarter against Arlington but never gave up.
“I’m proud of my kids for not giving up. We definitely weren’t playing our best at some points, but they fought hard,” said Roth.
Zoe Kirker had four goals with five steals and no kick-outs against Bonita, and Brittny Hummel had a career-high five goals against Arlington. Roth said that Jade Fitzgerald had a great all-around weekend.
