Royals’ stellar first half gets it done

It was a tale of two halves for the San Marcos boys hoopsters on Friday night.

Thankfully, the good half outweighed the bad, leading the Royals to a 52-46 win over Fillmore to set up a showdown with Carpinteria in Saturday’s title game.

Nick Marquez had 21 points for San Marcos, which drained every trey in the first half and went into the break with a 38-23 lead. The Flashes closed it all the way, however, as the score was 44-44 late in the contest. San Marcos managed only four points in the third quarter.“It seemed like there was a lid on the basket in the second half,” said coach Jarrod Bradley.

After Fillmore pulled even at 44, the Royals got some key stops, and Christian Mkpado hit a baseline 10-footer off a nice assist from Bryant Koopmans to put them up six with 1:30 left.

Marquez came out on fire in the game with three treys and also finished with three dunks in transition.
