Their campuses are about a mile apart, but the girls basketball teams from San Marcos and Bishop Diego had to drive all the way down to Fillmore on Wednesday to play each other.
The Royals (1-1) prevailed over the Cardinals 65-44 in the opening round of the Fillmore Tournament as Jeanette Mendoza had 12 points, 14 rebounds and five steals for the victors. Marissa Unzueta poured in a game-high 14 points while Lindsay Hyslop dished out five assists.
“We definitely improved our ball control tonight,” said coach Kristyn Miller, who saw her team turn the ball over 42 times in Monday’s opener against Channel Islands. “Bishop did a great job of fighting us off and we started slow but picked it up… We got everyone in the scoring column, which was great.”
Janelle Kohler led the Cardinals with 11 points.
The Royals continue tournament play against La Reina on Thursday.
